Standard 4: Human Resources Leadership
Principals will ensure that the school is a professional learning community. Principals will ensure that process and systems are in place which results in recruitment, induction, support, evaluation, development and retention of high performing staff. The principal must engage and empower accomplished teachers in a distributive manner, including support of teachers in day-to-day decisions such as discipline, communication with parents/guardians, and protecting teachers from duties that interfere with teaching, and must practice fair and consistent evaluations of teachers. The principal must engage teachers and other professional staff in conversations to plan their career paths and support district succession planning.
Element 4a. Professional Development/Learning Communities

The administration team and I attended a county wide professional development training on Poverty. This training has made me aware of the many students who come to school who live in poverty, and how we can best serve them and their families. We have taken this book back to Kinston High as a resource to support my teachers. Every teacher at KHS was given a copy of this book. The artifact to the left shows the SEA System Progress Report is from the training. The artifact below is the book we use in our PLC meetings. |
Element 4b. Recruiting, Hiring, Placing, and Mentoring of Staff
The school executive establishes processes and systems in order to ensure a high-quality, high-performing staff.
It is my responsibility to support my beginning teachers to ensure they are supported in the classroom. To the right is an email I sent to my new staff inviting them to participate in mock evaluations. Feedback communicated in writing, over the phone, in an email, or face to face. |

Element 4c. Teacher and Staff Evaluation
The principal evaluates teachers and other staff in a fair and equitable manner with the focus on improving performance and thus, student achievement.
At Kinston High School, the adminstration team and myself will conduct three observations on each teacher. I evaluate my staff using the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES). To the right are artifacts of a hard copy NCEES teacher evaluation rubric along with handwritten anecdotal notes I used during the evaluation. At the end of every evaluation, I leave a positive note (see sticky note below). My post observation meetings are held within ten days of the observation. I usually tend to schedule my post observation meetings the day of the observation.
