Element 1a. School Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals:
The school's identity, in part, is derived from the vision, mission, values, beliefs and goals of the school, the processes used to estblish these attributes, and the ways they are embodied in the life of the school community.
Our mission at Kinston High School is to graduate students who are academically and socially prepared to function as productive members in a global community by providing a challenging curriculum and opportunities to develop their talents and skills in a safe and nurturing environment. I led staff through "A typical student at KHS" activity that helped staff examine their values and beliefs and the values and beliefs we share in common. In groups of six, teachers brainstormed several words and phrases that describe a typical student at Kinston High such as: physical characteristics, family life, thoughts, attitude towards school, goals/ambitions/dreams, support, daily life, community perception, and obstacles for success. The group recorder listed their descriptions on giant chart paper. Staff members were asked to finish the phrase: "Learners at KHS..." "They need..." The administrative team closed the activity emphasizing to staff the importance of being sensitive to our students, yet holding them to high expectations, that we may fulfill the mission of Kinston High School.
Element 1b. Leading Change

Element 1c. School Improvement Plan
The school improvment plan provides the structure for the vision, values, goals and changes necessary for improved achievement for all students.
I am an active member of the School Improvement Team. I had the opportunity to lead a School Improvement meeting with members of Dimension E- Families and Community: Community Engagement. The 2017-2018 School Improvement Plan Indicators had already been chosen for Kinston High School prior to my residency placement. Prior to the meeting, staff were asked to bring their laptops and indicator task evidence(s) to the meeting. Team members assigned to an indicatior task reported the status of their progress. If goals were met, I marked them complete in Indistar. If goals were not met, the team and I assessed the progress, and decided if we needed to make revisions / change the due date. |

Element 1d. Distributive Leadership
The principal creates and utilizes processes to distribute leadership and decision making throughout the school.
The cleanliness of a school is vital to the school's culture. Kinston High School's campus is comprised of 8 separate buildings: the main building, cafeteria, vocational building, freshmen building, Cyber Campus, gymnasium, the field house, and the weight lifting building. We recently lost one of our custodians whose job duties were held mainly in the vocational building. Being short one custodian created a problem resulting in uncleaned bathrooms, dirty floors, unemptied trash and a negative perception of the school. I revised the Custodial Job Responsibilites Sheet so the custodians would know which part of the vocational building they would be responsible for until we hire another custodian.
